Kinfauns Castle was originally a medieval stone fortress, founded by the Charteris family. Kinfauns was the family seat from the 14th century but the character or date of the earlier castle is not known. The present building is a large two storey Gothic mansion, with three storey towers, a tall central tower and a large terrace with angle bastions. Designed by Sir Robert Smirke in 1822, it stands on the site of its predecessor. 3 miles south-east is Elcho Castle and 5 miles north-west at Ruthvenfield is Huntingtower.
