Birdoswald Gate was originally the 2nd century stone west gate, of the Roman Fort of Banna. In the 12th century, Waltere Baynin incorporated the gate into his stronghold, which was built within the remains of the fort. The gate was still in use in the 15th century, when its successor Birdoswald Tower was built adjacent to it. 4 miles south-east is Blenkinsopp Castle.
