Berwick Town Wall
NU 001-527

Berwick medieval town wall is built on the line of defences, founded by King Edward I in 1296. The wall of which large sections and fragments still survive, was started in the reign of King Edward II and strengthened in 1320 by King Robert the Bruce. By the 16th century it was a complex two and a half miles in length and its line of defence, included nineteen flanking towers and five gates, with the doors in the Bell Tower that gave access to the parapet, showing the original height of the wall.
