Camp Ring Culmington
SO 497-821 Shropshire England
Camp Ring is a small earthwork motte and bailey fortress, with a large adjacent L-shaped enclosure and a small fishpond. The castle stands on a low ridge, which is contained within the confluence of the River Corve to the west and the Pye Brook to the east. The low roughly circular motte is encased by a now seasonally wet ditch and the sub-circular south-western bailey is outlined by a substantial bank, with an outer ditch. The break in the ditch and a lowering of the bank, midway along the southern side of the bailey, appears to be the original entrance. 3 miles north at Corfton is The Mount and 6 miles west is Stokesay Castle.
Camp Ring is located east of Culmington, a public footpath from
the farm, passes the site. 25 miles south of Shrewsbury, on the A49-B4368.
The site is visible from the public footpath or the road.
