CastleUK Blog 2014
This is the place where I record and then archive my monthly updates and what's new in our hunt for castles UK.
I have the Ludworth wallpaper on my desktop, you look at the tower but are drawn to the information board, I'm old enough to know why but why are the opening times mid October to mid March, not the beginning of the month as now.

Ludworth Tower OS 88/NZ 356-413 County Durham England.
This wallpaper for July, was taken in June 2014 on a lovely day, you look at the tower but are drawn to the information board, I'm old enough to know why but why are the opening times mid October to mid March, not the beginning of the month as now. It was 15 years since our last visit and the one picture I took with my old film camera was rubbish. So it was good to have another look round and take lots of pictures with my Lumix, how things change, I can snap this wallpaper picture without knowing it. But be careful, this tower draws blood, I banged my head coming out of the tunnel vaulted basement, one day I'll might watch where I'm going. |
Stogursey Castle OS 182/ST 203-426 West Somerset England.
This wallpaper for August, was taken in July 2014 on one of the many sunny days, we had last month. The little 17th century cottage incorporates the early 14th century gate towers and guards the bridge onto a moated island. Better still it's Landmark Trust site, so you can be king and queen of this castle. |
Berkeley Castle OS 162/ST 685-989 Gloucestershire England.
Is a mid 11th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded by William fitz Osborn, earl of Hereford. In the mid to late 12th century, Robert Fitzhardinge and his son Maurice completely encased the motte in a shell keep and added the south and east bailey walls. Only the early 14th century gatehouse now remains in the outer bailey but in the inner bailey are ranges of buildings from the 12th, 13th and 14th century. Owned by the Berkeley family and the castle is open, Sunday to Wednesday April to October 11:00-5:00pm. I've had the castle on the website for many years, I put it on in the days when I was filling out the site, with pictures taken from old postcards, it needed to be updated, so at last I have now. It's a tricky one to photograph, you just can't get back far enough but it's a great one to visit & must be at the top of any castle hunters list. |
