Welshpool Castle is a 12th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress, which has been damaged in the making of a bowling green. The small motte stands on the southern edge of an oval bailey, which still retains parts of its rampart and ditch. The motte has a dense cover of trees, so it is best viewed in winter. A mile south-west is Powis Castle.
