Burlow Castle is a vague 12th century earthwork, which is possibly the remains of a motte and bailey or ringwork fortress. Standing against the steep banks of the River Cockmere, its strong ramparts, defend the approach along the ridge. On its large platform, fragments of 12th and 13th century pottery, along with Prehistoric flints from all periods have been found. Nearby is The Rookery and 10 miles north-west is Lewes Castle.
