Battle of Lewes 1264

This monument erected in 1964, marks King Henry III point of retreat, from the Battle of Lewes. The battle fought to the west of Lewes on the 14th of May 1264, was between the armies of King Henry III and the rebel baron, led by Simon de Montfort. Simon de Montfort won a famous victory, taking King Henry III prisoner and occupying the town.
