Rockhall Mote is a 12th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded by the Kirkpatricks. Standing on the west end of a high ridge, the large motte is encased by a rock-cut ditch and the remnants of a counterscarp bank. To the north-east is a small bailey, with the remains of its ditch on the north and east sides. The castle is the predecessor of Rockhall, which is sited a short distance to the south. 2 miles north-west is Torthorwald Castle.
