Lincluden CastleLincluden Castle is an earthwork motte and bailey fortress, one of two mottes built in Dumfries by the River Nith. In 1160 a nunnery was founded on the site of the bailey but after falling into a state of disrepute it was suppressed in 1389 and a collegiate establishment founded. After the Reformation the domestic buildings were fortified, so only the motte is now left of this early castle. Half a mile south-west is Lochside Castle and 17 miles north-west is Drumlanrig Castle.
