Caerlaverock Old Castle is a early 12th century square enclosure fortress, surrounded by double wet ditches. All that remains are the fine stone foundations of a curtain wall flanked by substantial square corner towers and standing in a cobbled courtyard, a chamberblock and hall range. It stood at the head of a natural harbour and was at the mercy of the Solway Firth flood tides, so after only fifty years it was abandoned and nearby Caerlaverock Castle was built.
