Caerlaverock Castle is a unique late 13th century stone enclosure fortress, surrounded by double ditches, the inner ditch still wet. A large outer court retains a low enclosing bank and a round-arched stone gateway. In the triangular-plan of the inner court are magnificent lodgings and apartments, ranged along the high curtain wall. At the corners are round flanking towers, one standing to its full height and a huge twin-towered gatehouse with elaborate machicolation at the wallheads. The early 13th century castle is just behind and can be viewed. 3 miles north is Isle Tower and 6 miles north-east is Comlongon Castle.
