Carlton Castle
SE 068-846 Yorkshire England

Carlton Castle CarltonCastle is an 11th century earthwork motte, founded by Ribald de Rufus. The circular flat-topped motte, retains part of its wide surrounding ditch but the position of the bailey has been lost. The once wet ditches of this timber fortress, would have been fed by the small stream, which still flows passed the castle. 3 miles north-east is Coverham Abbey Gatehouse.
