Castle Rushen is an early 13th century stone keep and bailey fortress, founded by the Viking Kings of Mann. In 1313, King Robert the Bruce besieged, captured and partly destroyed the castle but by the mid 14th century, William de Montacute had rebuilt the fortification. The central square keep in its inner courtyard, is encased by a 14th century curtain wall, flanked by square towers and a massive gatehouse. Probably the finest medieval castle in the British Isles, there are also 16th century Henrician additions of a surrounding glacis, with small round towers.
