Bellingham Castle
NY 841-833 Northumberland England
Bellingham Castle was possibly a mid to late 12th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded by the Bellingham family. It's possible that the mound supported a mid 13th century stone tower house but all traces of masonsy had disappeared by the 14th century. The existence of a fortification at Bellingham is suggested by documentary evidence but its location is in doubt. With the site of the bailey being lost and the motte crowned by a truncated mound, it's possible that the whole site is natural. 4 miles west is Dally Castle and 7 miles north-west is Black Middens Bastle.
Bellingham Castle is located in the village centre, off Redesmouth Road. 6 miles north of Hexham, on the A6079-B6320.
