Dunstanburgh Castle Dunstanburgh Castle is a magnificent 14th century stone keep and bailey fortress, built on a spectacular coastal site. The massive keep-gatehouse has two huge three storey drum towers flanking the gateway and above this gate on the second floor is a Great Hall. Beyond the gate is a small inner bailey built for John of Gaunt when the gateway was closed and a new entrance, protected by a barbican built to the north. On its must vulnerable sides the very large outer bailey has a high curtain wall, flanked by rectangular towers and turrets. 2 miles south is Craster Tower.
