The medieval town wall is built of magnesian limestone quarried near Tadcaster and is an impressive circuit of two and a half miles of towers and gates. The wall is generally 6 feet wide and 13 feet high including the embattled parapet, Walmgate Bar is the only gate to retain its barbican.
