Salcombe Castle is a stone artillery fortress, founded to protect the harbour by Henry VIII. Standing on an isolated rock, are the 16th century remains of a curtain wall, flanked by a large round tower and a small square tower. The site was abandoned after Civil War slighting and its seaward defences have been completely eroded away. Visit pending. 17 miles north-east is Dartmouth Castle.
